Monster is an entertaining yet unbelievably messy mix of South Korean revenge thriller tropes and an over the top coming of age comedy about two sisters and a little girl.
Kim Go-eun-I plays Bok-Soon a young woman with developmental disability who runs a street stall and takes care of her younger sister. She has a pretty short fuse and regularly beats people up in comedic fashion whereas her sister is the smart and calm one that studies hard.
They meet a little girl whose big sister got murdered by the maniac killer Tae-soo played by Lee Min-ki. He kills Bok-soon's sister and she goes on the run with the little girl by her side.Obviously everything here is all across…

Far too tonally inconsistent.
I just don't get why they thought all the goofy moments were needed (e.g., Bok-soon's crazy ass granny daydream, Bok-soon's song, Bok-soon and Na-ri enthusiastically shouting at each other, etc.). If they had simply stuck with the more grim tone that focused on the murder, blood (so much blood), and revenge aspects that were exclusively advertised in the goddamn trailer, this would've been soooo much better.
That said, Monster has a really good, well-earned call back moment towards the end that got me hyped!

At first, I thought the director would go all dark with the script but nope lol this is such a fucked-up movie. I love it so much anyway, I've rewatched it countless of times.

It's funny and warm. There is murder and gore too. There is actually a lot of murder and gore. But the way the movie looks, it feels like you are watching two movies at once.
It also reminds me of "death note." Two people who have similar motivations but live their ideals in vastly different ways. And the difference is exaggerated and partially by the acting which is exaggerated as well. Nothing is subtle. It has strong shounen manga aesthetics, which is a sensibility that I really enjoy and respect. Lee Min Ki dresses slightly emo and that to me just adds to the shounen experience. Idk if this was intentional or not but I love it.

The second movie called "Monster" that I've seen this week (and easily the better of the two).
I definitely have a soft spot for Korean films and overlook the problematic portrayals of mentally handicapped people. However, this movie just takes so many turns, it's hard not to overlook everything else about it.
Frankly it's not particularly well-shot and the narrative suffers from a lot of pacing problems, but the last 30 minutes of the film more than make up for it. It's absurd, violent, and surprisingly endearing; everything I want in a Korean movie that I can stream on dramafever.
But seriously though, someone get these Korean children oscars. I swear every movie I see has some Korean child acting their goddamn brains off.

That was absolutely nuts. It's good to know quality Korean revenge thrillers are still alive and kicking. Not since I Saw the Devil have I seen such grueling, visceral, white knuckle butchery. I kinda knew beforehand that this had potential since it's directed by Hwang In-ho. He previously made the horror-comedy Spellbound, which was a total blast, and it seems to me that he's a guy who knows his shit when it comes to horror. In this film, he mixes all the fine elements of the genre just right and creates out of it the purest, most basic form of the revenge thriller. The narrative is quite conventional actually. It's a no-frills approach, and there's no complicated side story or…

Monster is a curious mix of screwball comedy and bizarre family thriller that make for a completely twisted yet fresh viewing experience. It ambitiously attempts to sandwich laughs in between the devastating misfortunes of its lead characters who've all fallen victim to broken homes torn apart by brutal violence, greed, or other mental challenges. As hard of a task as this may sound to do and although Monster takes time to find its footing, the third act almost blissfully balances these two extremes as it bookends one of the most visceral and rage-filled bloodbaths I've ever seen with smiles on either end. Sometimes, a simple revenge thriller is real treat.
Highlights:
- The main character is painfully dumb and is totally unequipped to face a serial killer; this makes her incredibly charming and likeable
- While the plot is pretty simple, there are some heavy elements that still pack a good emotional punch
- The violence is brutal and messy, which removes the feeling of safety and shows the antagonist has no bounds to his methods
- Good relationship between the main character and the little girl [supporting character] that creates a good balance of light-heartedness in this dark filmCriticisms:
- Some of the plot unfolds in a very unconvincing and "lucky" way that seems far-fetched from reality
- There is… -
How come her smartphone doesn't have password !
that little monster have some mammy issues xD
And why they make the killer always attractive
All he wanted was to be loved,
have come to the conclusion that Lee Min Ki is an all around great actor The way he portrayed the psychotic killer was perfect. I thought the producers chose the best actor who could pull this off. The movie itself was very entertaining. It was funny, scary, awesome, and weird. The fight scenes were awesome also. there r some errors but still great -
the part where she slams a fruit on someones head is better than most movies ive seen
